AMOC Speed championship report - Doran Moore Memorial Sprint
Anglesey Circuit, (Trac Mon) North Wales, 18 April 2026
Anglesey Circuit is located on the island of Anglesey at the northwest tip of Wales, a most picturesque race track on the cliffs overlooking the Irish Sea. It can be fearsomely wet, windy and cold. We were in luck for the AMOC speed championship sprint event as it was a bright crisp day, our cars sparkled in the early morning sunshine.
The night before we had stayed at the delightful Country House Hotel and had a great meal and pre-event chat.
As always scrutineering starts early and we were in the early batch of cars so no time for hotel breakfast in the morning.
We considered a madcap plan to return to the hotel for breakfast in between scrutineering and first practice for breakfast, fortunately the hotel was helpful enough to prepare hot breakfast sandwiches for us delivered in style by Harrison’s family – thank you.
The event was organised very effectively by Longton and District Motor Club. We were 5 entrants of the 150 or so total.
Peter House was driving his, new to him, white GT4 vantage;
Mark Chandler in his amazingly quick straight 6 Db7;
Tim Price squeezing the last few seconds from his V12 manual Vantage S;
Harrison Smith, on only his second event, in a remarkably nimble Mazda X5;
And me bringing up the rear in my 69 year old `DB2/4mk II.
We all had a great day, with progressively improving times for us all.
Normally on such an event we would expect 1 practice and 3 or 4 timed runs (the timed runs count towards championship points). The organisation on the day was so good, some of us managed to squeeze in 7 runs - real value for money.
Anglesey is a quick track, challenging, with inclines, off camber corners, hairpins, and fast straights - great fun. One such straight leads to a sharp left hand 140 degree fast hairpin, which required us to optimise car and braking points, however the sun sparkling off the sea, just below the cliffs directly in front of you, was an added distraction - that’s my excuse for missing the apex anyway!
So to the times
The class winner - Peter House at 60.50 seconds;
Closely followed by Tim Price, with 62.06;
Mark in his DB7 clocked 67.46;
Harrison improved with each run watched but not put off by his family. His best time 72.30;
I followed up, a slow last at 83.47.
We all agree it was an outstanding location and a great day out. The trip back along the north coast expressway rewarded us with stunning scenery as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Driving back to Yorkshire, I reflected on why we enter the speed championship – iconic locations, supportive friends and fellow competitors, Aston Martin cars, an excuse for a day out and fun. Are we competitive - absolutely yes, but in a very positive manner.
Come and join us. Remember there is only one car on the circuit at the time so mistakes are yours alone to make! Other competitors momentary lapses cannot damage your car. You just need to beat your own time; it doesn’t have to be fast – but is probably more fun if it is! Road cars are fine, all you need is, an approved helmet and race overalls, tow eye to front and rear, timing strut and that’s about it.
Have a peek at the AMOC speed championship calendar on the events page - if you have time and are near a future event come along for a chat.
